Two of the worst aspects of cancer and treatment for cancer are stress and pain, and arranging for Tim’s breathing workshops is yet another inspirational initiative from Brighter Outlook/Albion in the Community to help with alleviating the cumulative effects of this illness. Addressing something as primal as breathing, learning to do it correctly, and paying attention to such a basic necessity is helpful in so many ways; for people feeling out of control of their physical body it is a way of reasserting some of that control, and reconnecting with something positive about their physicality. There is a biodynamic aspect to not breathing properly, so being shown how to, and then told to under instruction can help address some very deep-seated issues, possibly an unexpected result for some people.

Then there is the interesting science behind Tim’s exercises, and the evidence that they work, which we taking part were actually experiencing for ourselves. Several times in the past week I have employed the newly learned techniques to pull myself back from the stress reaction to acute pain, by taking control of my breathing and not exacerbating the feeling of panic.

Additionally, if there was a kinder, more good-humoured, better listener than Tim to take this workshop it would be hard to find them. He seemed equally interested in what we had to say, although he must have heard much of it before, and there was no sense that we were being judged for not doing ‘well’ or for having to ask questions if we had not understood first time round. He was also well acquainted with the history behind what he was talking about, though he wears his learning lightly and we never felt we were getting a lecture thrown in.

Again, I am incredibly grateful for having had this opportunity and know it has made an important change to my life. I do hope that it will be made available for other patients in the future, or at least incorporated into the already brilliant programmes being run by Brighter Outlook/Albion in the Community. Last year I had pneumonia following Covid -this turned into asthma. When I heard about Tim and the Buteyko breathing method, it seemed like a chance to improve my lung health and do something about the asthma.I have only recently completed the course but I’m very happy with the results in a short space of time with asthma symptoms almost disappearing and I have more energy.This is a long-term project but I am planning to contact my GP in a few months time to discuss coming off my asthma inhaler.An added bonus for me was the switch from mouth breathing to nasal breathing has given me other benefits.I have been breathing mostly through my mouth for decades due to a blocked nostril - this was fixed 20 years ago but I had no advice to breathe only through my nose. I didn’t really think anything of it, not many people do!At night I would have a dry mouth and wake several times a night to drink water and wake up feeling groggy.Now I no longer have a dry mouth, night time visits to the loo have decreased and I wake up with more energy.Nasal breathing really can be a life changer - thanks Tim!

I would like to thank you so much for your help and assistance especially during the 1st lockdown in the spring of 2020.

Your dedication to helping your colleagues through these dark times, gave us a light at the end of the tunnel. The collective walk by everyone to ‘Reach the North Pole’ kept all the team connected and motivated to see how many steps / miles everyone was managing. whether it was half a mile or 10 miles, it was just wonderful to be part of a team again. 

You taught us all the basics of Tai Chi. I will forever remember attempting to ‘grasp the sparrows tail’ and ‘the cow gazing back at the moon’. As well as the rest of the family laughing at me during the first attempts of the ‘4 walls’ with my feet all over the place. However with your patience and help I did quite well, even if I do say so myself :)

What I will really take from your teaching will be the guided meditation, which I found relaxing in both the body and the mind. Thank you.

Through this you have also kindly helped my wife Julie with her major anxiety issues that has caused her to give up her work, we will both always be eternally grateful.

It was really a pleasure and a serendipitous moment to have Tim conduct meditation and Xi gong classes for our Australian retail team during the lockdowns in 2020 & 2021. In the past eight years, I had the honour to collaborate with Tim Johnson in various projects.
